Our opinion about Westgate Shopping Centre

The Westgate Shopping Centre is an old building on 1960. This building is colourated grey and many people don't enter because it doesn't give a good impression.
We visited the Westgate Shopping Centre to understand what is needed to improve this structure. This building has an small entrace and it's an obstacle for disable people .
This Shopping Centre has many different shops (from a music shop to a boutique).
I don't like the placement of the Supermarket (Sunsbury's Local), because it isn't near the entrace. The large corridor is beautiful but it isn't very confortable for old people and the children, it needs confortable benches and a creche with a baby sitter because the mothers can't find their babies when they visit the shopping centre. Then it needs more floor space where put other shop and various types of shops.
Westgate can be better if it more green space, because the people who want go to buy and visit the Westgate must stay in a confortable place and the green can be a good place to relax.

People's reaction to our design for a new post office

On Friday 23rd March, we went to the Clarendon centre to show some people our design for a new post office in the Westgate. We chose this project because we think only one post office in a city such as Oxford isn't sufficient.

People's reaction to our design was quite good, because they were enthusiastic about our original idea of creating a post office in a shopping centre.

They said that it would be good to build it near the entrance, and they also gave us a suggestion; they thought that we should enlarge the area for cashiers.

Visit on castle complex

On Wednesday 21/03/07 we went to castle complex in Oxford that before was a big prision where the criminals were pulished. Now in this castle there is a hotel, a restaurant and a shops but the surprise was that the owner of the italian restaurant. One part of the hotel looked very ugly because there isn't a good view from inside, another part of the hotel is very nice because there is a big garden,. The castle has a medieval style has in 1071 but it also presents a modern style expecially in the building where the hotel is. The castle is very big and beautiful garden. The windows are similar to the windows of the prision and it has a black door built in 1071.

What people would like to change in the Westgate

Some of them said that the Westgate is a complete shopping centre.
they don`t want smoking area and no vending machines.
So according to these information we could change the design of the Westgate

My role in interviewing people about our design for a new Post Office.

This morning, I went with my class (Castellammare 1) to interview people about the new design of a "Post Office" in the Westgate Shopping Centre.

My role was camera man, but people didn't want to be filmed.

In my opinion I think that English people are very cold and in this interview my role wasn't important.

Today, we went to the "Clarendon Centre" to interview people to find out their think about our post office project in the "Westgate Shopping Centre".
Some people as usual were very busy so we could interview a few people that gave us positive feedback but they had to say that there weren't any kiosks and the spaces between two kiosks was very little but in general they agreed.

A lot of people said that it's a good project and a lovely design, because it's in a shopping centre and so a lot of people can go to other shops and also to the post office, but a few people said it isn't a good idea to build a post office in a shopping centre, but they didn't say why. Some people said our design is big enough.

This morning we went to the Clarendon Centre to ask the people what they think about our project of the new Post Office in the Westgate Shopping Centre. They think that a new Post Office is a good idea, because only one in the isn't sufficent; we showed them the our design of the new Post Office, but some people declared that isn't a good idea because there is already a post office in Oxford.

Yestarday morning, we chose our project; the free meeting place, where people can meet other people, and in this project there is also some entertainment: many sofas and tables, where you can rest or stay when you wait for your friends, and there are also some vending machines where you can buy food or drinks, and in the middle of the building there is a little beautiful fountain, and you can also call your friends with public phones. The building is surrounded by green because there is a little garden, we have designed this project all together and with the help of the school we went to the Westgate shopping centre to know the people's opinion; and with Autocad on the computer today we have a beautiful project.

THE CASTLE/ PRISON COMPLEX

On wednesday 21/03/07 we went to castle complex that before was a big prison, where the criminals were pulished. Now in this castle there is a hotel, a restaraunt and a gift shop but the surprise was that the owner of the restaurant is italian. He was born in Calabria but he lives in Australia, he invited us in his restaurant but it is a bit expensive for exmple a dish of past cost 7£. The castle has a medieval style has in 1071 but it also presents a modern style expecially in the building where the hotel is. The castle is very big and it is souroded by a very big and beautiful garden, the windows are similar to the windows of the prison and it has a black dooor built in 1071 which wasn't destroyed during the hotel building.

Visit to the old prison and castle redevelopment

Today, we saw the old prison and castle redevelopment. There is a hotel which used to be a prison. One part of the hotel looked very ugly, because there isn't a good view from inside. Another part of the hotel is very nice, because there is a garden and it looks comfortable. It is an original idea and will probably attract people.
There are many restaurants of different types. The presentation of these restaurants is very nice, we saw olive trees, flowers and generally the style is typically Mediteranean. There is also a good transport network in place.
The view of the Westgate shopping centre from inside the castle complex was disagreeable, because it looks dark and the style is 1960s.
The new development highlights the need for a new shopping centre.

An hour with Huw Davis

Yesterday afternoon after the lunch time we met a important member of the staff that have planned the new "Westgate Shopping Centre".The demolition of some houses will start this summer and all people that lived there must transfert in other new houses that the Council must built for them. Now there are some problems for old people and mothers with babies that are fond of their houses and don't want to leave.

Huw Davis also talked about the environmentally friendly design of the shopping centre. He said that many trees will be planted and when they are big they will cut them down and use them for the heating system. This project has been made for to be sustanible with a small impact on the nature because a lot of people are worried for the most pollution that this structure will can product.

Talk by a surveyor: Huw Davis

Yesterday afternoon a land surveyor (Huw Davis) came to school and he showed us a project about a shopping centre in Oxford (Westgate centre). He showed us the plans for the shopping centre and he described to us some problems about the realization of the new shopping centre. He said that to build the new shopping centre they must demolish some houses. We think that it's very difficult for the peoples because they are fond of their houses and don't want to leave them. Another problem is the realization of the new shopping centre will take four years.
About the environmentaly friendly design, it will have solar panels, greener heating system using trees, the original stream will not be changed. This new shopping centre is very important for the local economy because the people of Oxford will not go to other shopping centre outside Oxford.
People of Oxford need a car park. Maybe it is a good idea if the car park is outside the centre and the people will take the bus to arrive at the shopping centre.We think that this new project is beautiful because Oxford needs of the new shopping centre.

Talk by a surveyor: Huw Davis

Yesterday, we met a surveyor, Huw Davis, to talk about the new Westgate shopping centre in Oxford. The main points were: why Oxford needs a new shopping centre, housing, enviromentaly friendly design, car park, and the length of the project.

1. Why Oxford needs a new shopping centre: Huw Davis said that it is needed for the local economy, many people are leaving Oxford to go shopping in another city, and this new shopping centre will also be an attraction for tourists, and maybe it will be cheaper than others shops in Oxford.

2. Housing: This is a bad point for some residents in the area, because the project will destroy their houses, and we think these people probably object strongly.

3. Enviromentally friendly design: For us this is a good point, because there will be solar panels, many trees and it won't change the original stream.

4. Car park: Also this is a good idea, because a new car park will be built near the city centre with many car parking spaces.

5. The length of the project: The building will take about four years, in fact the work will start in summer and it is going to finish in 2011.

We think that it was a good idea to talk with a surveyor, because we found out some important information about this new shopping centre, and also we think that it is a good plan for Oxford and also for local economy.

A day with a landsurveyor.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. Huw Davis, a landsurveyor came to school.He explained to us the new project to restyle the Westgate shopping centre, because the shopping is for tourists and it's expensive!!! Also people are leaving Oxford to go shopping in other cities.


In our opinion, this plan presents negative and positive things...

The negative things are:

- Car park is negative for people, because the cars make CO2 , and produce more pollution.


- The old houses will be destroyed and this might detract from the "old style" atmosphere of this area.


- The length of the project will be four years and this is a problem for the tourists that come to Oxford and also for the local people!

The positive things are:

- The new shopping centre will be good for the local economy.

- We regard to the environmentally friendly design, it will have solar panels, a greener heating system using trees and the flow of the original stream will not be changed.

In general we think that this project is very interesting for tourists because the new building is a meeting point for the tourists, but the price of the things will become more expensive. The local people will go shopping in other cities, because the prices in other cities aren't so expensive.

The English land-surveyor

Yesterday we met a land-surveyor, Hugh Davis, to talk about the redevelopment of the WESTGATE centre.He explained to us about his plan that it was very interesting but maybe to hard to understand because he talked too fast.Before the meeting in our class we prepared some questions with Rebecca and after he talked we interacted with him. While he talked there was Rodney that filmed all the interview and he took also some photos. To tell the truth it was very interesting but just a little bit bored.

This morning, we went to a street near the covered market to interview people about the new shopping centre. Generally speaking, public opinion was that it is a good idea because there would probably be a bigger range of products on sale. People's reactions were generally very positive.

According to our research, pollution is a concern for about half of the people we questioned. In our opinion, however, pollution isn't a very serious problem. If the shops are in another city, the level of pollution could be very high if people travel by car to other cities to find better shops. Therefore we think that if Oxford has better shops people won't travel to other places and this might reduce the amount of traffic on the roads. To go to the city centre, people often use bikes or buses which is healthier for the environment. In addition it's important for the local economy, and for foreign people. Unfortunately people thought that it wouldn't be good for small shops because the prices in the new shopping centre would be lower than in the small shops, so many people would go to the new shopping centre.

On Wednesday we went to Westgate centre where we visited many shops.In our opinion this shopping centre is very good because there are many efficient shops where we can find different product with different prices. There were three cloeths shops a big supermarket, call Sainsbury's, many shoe shops, and little object shops. We went to Westgate centre because we have to prepare a progect on shops and shopping. And we sow the problems that there are in the parking and in the toilets of Westgate.

The toilets aren't clean and the people can't use them. The parking is very small and so the people don't have an efficiente service,when they go to shopping centre.

PRESENTATION OF ITALIAN PROJECT

Yesterday afternoon we showed our project to our english teachers and to the headmaster of this school. That project was about our city and the rebeautification of our ancient spas that are in a state of decay. During the filming three our friends illustred the project and a little introdoction about our beautiful city.We think that the video and its songs was suitable to show our city. It was a good project but it could be better if we spoke more about it, during the show of the video, to help the people that don't know nothing about the project to understand it. At the end we gave a characteristc present of our city to the headmaster.!!!!

Filming sketches

The day before yersterday our group made some sketches. They were very funny beacause we always got the lines wrong and we always laughed. We have to say that sketches were set in a chemist with 3 different situations. Actors acted not very well because they were too excited and that it was their first time anyway we had lots of fun. One funniest sketches was probably the one where there was a man with the diahorrea. Actors who acted in this sketch was Francesco Carmine Dario and Luca.We chose this type of sketch because our schoolfriends had a vote and so we chose it together.Besides we chose to do funny sketches because we thought that they could be more pleasent to view.

Design and presentation of westgate projects

Yesterday morning we were divided into three groups, and each group drew a plan of what westgate need and today the groups show the plan to other students. The three plans were more interesting maybe because the students used fantasy for each project.
We think that the westgate needs a chemist, a baby area, a big car park, a smoking area, a games room, more clean toilets, an internet point and a hair dresser.
Our groups made three different designs of the shopping centre.
The first group had designed a plan at L shape where there was a big car park, an other was a pentagon where in the center there was a fast food, the last was rectangle with a long corridor where there were many seats and a big a smoking area with an exit outside the westgate.
These days were very beautiful and often tiring and embarassing but more amusing and funny.
I'd like to pass all days like this (also in our italian school!)!!!!!!!!!

The Westgate Shopping Centre

In our view the "Westgate Shopping Centre" is an old structure of 1960s in fact its facade is not very modern and new because is by now old and is colourated of grey so the people don't enter in for the impression is not good. Another reason which that the W.S.C. is not very frequented by people is because this structure is returned more old from the library situated near it that is also it grey and to neglect.

the 3rd day in Oxford!

In our 3rd day in Oxford we have visited the "Westgate shopping centre",we have fun so much,because we went shopping in many cheap shops.The Westgate centre for us is very big,there are a lot of shops, it is a modern constuction and also many people go in!But the secon entrance of the shopping centre is a bit dark, there aren't many restaurants and bar. Further, the Westgate haven't a post office, internet access and more benchs for old and young people.
In the afternoon we recorded our sketches in the students room...after we have some questions for English people about the shopping in Oxford!!!!!!

We are tired,now we go home and after we go out to have a birthday party for Gianmarco and Antonio!!!!!

Shopping in Oxford

Yesterday, for our progect, we went in a modern department store, called Westgate Shopping Centre. This is a beautiful building, but there aren't many facilities and many important shop, for example a chemist and a post office. This shopping centre isn't very expensive, but the entrace is small and disabled people don't power to enter. For young people is a beautiful place, but for old people is very boring. We don't like the placement of shops and we think there aren't enought for local people and tourists. There is one supermarket, but it is very fan from the entrace.

Interviews in Oxford

Yesterday we went out to interview local people in Oxford. We found that some people were very friendly and some were very unfriendly- we decided it depended on the location. We found a quiet street near the Covered market and that was where we had some success and met some interesting people. We are going to continue our interviews, hopefully on Thursday.

my daily routine

In the morning i get up at half past seven, I have the breakfast, I have a shower and i put my clothes.After I take the bus to go to school; when I arrive at school I stay go out to spaek with my friends.At twentee past nine the lessons starts. My friends and I stady until at 10.45am because we have the break. At 11.15am we go in the classroom to study. At 12.45 we have the lunch. We return to school at 2.00pm. At 3.35 we finish the lesson and we go home. Aboute 6.30pm we have the dinner and after we have the shower and we go out. We go to sleep at 11.30pm.

Our day started when we arrived in the city center of Oxford by bus from the family that put us up. The lesson started at 9.20 p.m and we was divided in two groups. Our teachers are very friendly and nice called Rebecca and Jane. During the lesson we went out for a tour around the city. We saw a lots of old church and colleges. there was also a typical english pub and sigthseeing busses. The architecture of the city is mostly gothic and all toghether it makes a typical English view, the green, so there are a lots of garden. The weather is good but it a little more cold of the italian weather. Now we are going to a tea party with all the students of all nationalites. !!!!!!!!!!!

Our first day in Oxford

Our first day in Oxford was very funny and creative but we have to say that it was a bit tiring. As first thing we saw the enormous University situated in a very big park with a lots of green and a lake with two ducks.The weather was sunny but very cold.We walked for a long time while we took lots of pictures.We visited the most ancient pub called "The Bear" built in 1242. We also visited the covered market where we saw many typical English shops. Our guides were our new English teachers Rebecca and Jane. They went crazy because of us, streets were very crowded and it was quite dangerous because in Italy drivers are on the opposite side so we weren't used to it.We saw also the English buses that are different from ours...they're bigger and more colourful.We went to a typical grocery shop where we bought two chocolate chips cookies....they were excellent!!!! For us it was a wonderful day...we had great time and we hope that will be the same for the entire stay although we know it will be!!!

Teenagers life in Oxford

This morning we saw many churches and some parks, but we have perceived the medieval building where has been recorded the film of Harry Potter. We saw many old pubs, for an example "The Bear".
Oxford is a beautiful city for teenagers , because there are many places and shops for young people and many colleges for English and International people.
This day fortunately has been very good with a beautiful sun, so we have been on an excursion with our new English teacher.
In this excursion we saw many colleges, that are very similar to the medieval churches, for an example "Trinity College of Oxford".
This excursion is not very long, and on the way we saw the Covered Market where there are many different shops where is possible to buy somenthig elements.
For our this excursion has been very interesting for architectural structure that are in Oxford City.

The first day at Oxford

This morning in Oxford I saw a lot of places, as Christ church, Corpus Christi College, Trinity College, Covered Market and Bodleian Library.
I think Oxford is a very ancient city, because it has many important old buildings.
The weather was very fine today, but it was cold.
I saw many colleges as Trinity college and Christ Church College. they are very ancient and they are very particuilaire for them structure.
I walk High Street and other small streets.
And I saw Covered Market, and I think it is a very big market with many types of shops.
